As a kid, what did you look forward to most about summer vacation/break/holiday?
We went camping every summer, and I don’t have many memories of that… But I do remember going to Girl Scout Camp the summer after I turned 12, I was really awkward at 12… I was chubby and didn’t care much about hair/make-up and clothes. Mom sent me to The Timbers to sailing camp. I was the youngest girl in the group of 9 girls who were sailing. We had 2 tents assigned to us, and I was the 5th one in the one tent, while the other had just four girls. After one week, the girls in my tent decided that I should move into the other tent… It was only fair, why should they get less space than the other girls. I remember spending a lot of time at the infirmary. My mom sent me a care package with the Judy Bloom book Forever in it, as well as something about Endless Love (I don’t remember quite what she sent, but it was something to be jealous of). Endless Love was the hot movie that summer, if I remember correctly. The thing I hated the most was that I spent 2 weeks wondering why those girls hated me. I think it was normal teenage shit.
The next summer, I was sent again… To sailing camp, I did not want to go, and threw a big fuss about it. As it turned out, I was the most popular girl at sailing camp that summer, as I already knew how to sail. I got to take the catamaran out by myself. That was my LAST summer at Girl Scout camp. I remember being really happy about that.
Look who’s talking…
