silicon valley turn around?

today wired.com suggests that the job market in san francisco for technical workers is getting better. i think that is a true statement, to a point. there are a bunch of us out there who have wonderful web skills. unfortunately, when you are out of work, you forget that you need to keep up with your skill set WHILE you are looking for work. it is very easy to get consumed in the fact that you are not working.

i see so many people on sfwow complaining about some of these new tech jobs. html, perl, java, c++, illustrator and flash all wraped up in one employee, and the job pays $15 an hour. (funny thing is, their site is DOWN right now). speed sees the same thing everyday… jobs were employeers are asking for the moon and want to pay a sub-living-wage for the skills.

now, it is possible that at one point in time, a person who is out of work had one or more of those skills. now, you take that with a year of being out of work. and the fact that these employers are going to want to test your skills. a lot of the people who are out of work, and need these jobs are going to be in the same boat they were yesterday. it’s not a nice boat. knowing that if someone would just give you a chance, you could make a difference.

i hope that these new jobs are really geared for the skill set of those people out of work… or they are at least something that someone could be easily trained to do.
