Two firsts for Sean.

There are lots of firsts that I’m looking forward to having with Sean…  First haircut, first real food, first smile, that kind of thing.  Friday brought a first for Sean.  First trip to the emergency room.

Honestly, it totally freaked me out.  You see, we had our normal 4 am feeding, and he passed out.  So, I put him in the bassensette, and tried to go back to sleep.  I hoped Sean would do the same.  He never did, neither did I.  I listened to him fuss for about 45 minutes, and then he started to hack and choke.  When I got to him, he had mucus coming out of his nose, out of his mouth and was wailing like no tomorrow.

I thought OH MY GOD, what the hell happened?  I thought maybe he had a cold coming on or something.  So, I had John start a hot shower so that we could break up the mucus in his nose.  Then I told John to get my mom.  She told me to call the pediatrician, while she stayed in the bathroom with the baby.  By the time I got back to my bathroom, my mom told me to take Sean to the emergency room.

Off we went to Good Sam.  Not to El Camino where Seans pediatrician practices, but at Good Sam, less than 2 miles from the house.  I was nervous because I had no idea what was wrong, and they didn’t know Sean there.

We walked in, and Sean met the triage nurse (whose name was also Sean).  He had me get him undressed.  When I picked up Sean he burped twice, and went back to his normal calm happy sleeping self.  I was so embarrassed.  We saw the doctor who said that he had reflux…  That’s it.  Sean had reflux.  Scared John and I half to death, but he was fine.  A little saline down his nose and off we went.  Like everything was always good.

I still feel stupid, like it was my fault that he didn’t burp.  Dr. Gallagher said that it was Sean’s fault that he didn’t burp.  It is his responsibility to burp before he goes to bed.  I don’t believe her really.  But it makes me feel better anyway.

Sean has also gained 1/2 a pound.  Thank god.  His first weight gain.  That is a good first.  He is now 8 lbs 13 oz.  It won’t be long until he is back to his birth weight.  That will make me happy.  John too.

I’ll try to post new pictures soon!

  1. Poor baby, and momma and daddy.  If his reflux keeps up they can give him some meds for it that will help.  Especially if he starts spitting up lots and lots.

First babies are always so scary b/c you just don’t know what’s up with everything yet.  Better a trip to the ER to be safe any day.

  2. Oh I was so scared reading that! Don’t EVER feel stupid for doing something or not doing something…… I only have one son and everything is a first for us too. You acted quickly and appropriately.  It’s going to be great!
