LOAD517 – Day 2 – resist

Our prompt for day two of LOAD was, “no words! Embrace the silence of the silent films.”  FYI, the whole point of scrapbooking is the words!  I mean really, it’s virtually impossible for me not to have a word or two on my page.  But, when I thought about it, the perfect place to scrapbook without words is Manzanar.  I was looking for something ethereal, but broken.  I had a specialty piece of paper that is more fabric than paper.  I had a piece of scrap that looked like old wood.  I wanted everything to feel distressed, so I distressed the photo, and it’s backing paper.  I added a Prima Clock, a Tim Holtz steel star, and some twine.  There is also a bit of map, and a title.  Resist.

About the title.  Manzanar was one of the hardest places I have ever visited.  It’s dusty and lifeless…  Not much grows out there.  I was fine, kinda, until we found the monument.  That killed me.  I was sobbing.  It was so sad.  The fact that we stuck these poor Japanese descendants out here, because we were scared.  Now we, collectively as a country, are discussing doing this again, but with Muslims.  I think we, collectively as a country, need to spend a bit more time at Manzanar.  It’s wrong.  We don’t treat people this way.  At least I don’t think we do.  Even if I understand why people think it should be done, I honestly believe we shouldn’t do this.  This is horrible.  This should never happen again.  This is why we must resist.

We must be diligent.  We have to stand up for those who are being oppressed.  We have to be better.  We have to show the world that we are better than this.
