LOAD514 – Day Nine, The Bus Stops Here

Scrapbook LO of Cook Elementary School, Flint, MichiganToday’s prompt was “The Little Red School House.”  What an interesting prompt.  Of course, I went a looking through the slides, yet again.  I was looking for Jefferson Elementary School, or the actual building of Flint Open School in 1976 or so.  I couldn’t find it.  Boy it’s hard searching for photos.

Then, I found this…  A great picture of Cook Elementary School in Flint, Michigan.  I did not go to this school.  I looked at going to this school.  I remember spending a day there, and being so confused about sitting in a desk all day, and having different classes to go to.  The structure was crazy, and I hated it.  Flint Open School was a charter school.  We had certain things that we had to learn through out the school year, but we got to choose what we wanted to learn and how we wanted to learn it.  It was a school experience not many kids have.

But, the memory I have of Cook Elementary School has to do with the ugly double doors.  That is where Nancy Sarver, Jennifer & Janette McDonald, my sister, and I waited for the bus to take us to school.  We would play chinese jump rope and jacks in the stair well.  I remember trying to see how high we could jump over that elastic band…  We even went up the stairs a bit to get higher so we could jump in.  Jump in, jump out, jump side to side, jump on, jump in, jump out.  I still remember us chanting it.

Another memory down.  Let us hope that Sean will appreciate it one day…  Or maybe one of his children.  :)
